Neal Cassady and Jack Kerouac

ON THE ROAD...

On January 19, 1942, with his friend Neal Cassady at the wheel of a maroon Hudson, Jack Kerouac set off from New York for San Francisco. The cross-country drive became the central metaphor of his Beat testament to freedom, On the Road, which was published in 1957

Kerouac based the character Dean Moriarty on Cassady and spent six months working on the manuscript while staying with Neal and his wife, Carolyn, on Russian Hill.
