This site used to be home to the California Star, the first newspaper in the city and the one that started the rush in 1848 by spreading the cry of "Gold!. The present building, a three-tiered pagoda, once housed the operators for Chinatown's telephone system and later the local Pacific Telephone and Telegraph offices.
