The opulent Fox Theater once occupied the entire area bounded by Market, Hayes, and Polk streets. In 1963, real estate developers bought the property demolished the fox, and built a high rise office/apartment complex. On the night of the Fox's last show, the organist--non other than Anton LaVey, future founder of the Church of Satan--cursed the property's owners. The high-rise has apparently suffered problems ever since and retains a creepy ambiance that strengthens as the elevator lifts you to the upper floors
